They’re releasing an acoustic re-working of Animals, which they made in collaboration with original vocalist Stu Smith, who sang on Animals but left the band in 2011. The new acoustic album also features contributions from Nate Kinsella (Birthmark, American Football, Joan of Arc, etc), Yvette Young(Covet), Mivos Quartet, and The Kraken Quartet. We’re premiering the new acoustic version of “Gibbon,” which stays pretty true to the original, but also clearly has its own distinct vibe. In this form, it actually kinda reminds me a little of Iron & Wine. Listen and compare it to the original below. Animals Acoustic comes out October 5 via Sargent House (pre-order).

TTNG are also going on an Animals 10th anniversary tour, where they’ll perform the album in its entirety, and Stu Smith will be joining the band for the tour too.

There’s a NYC show on October 16 at Brooklyn Bazaar. A week or so in the lead-up to the wedding, it was announced that two of Sargent House’s math-iest acts — TTNG and one-man project Mylets — would be playing in Singapore come May 6th, as part of KittyWu Records’ 10th-anniversary festivities. As a passing jest, I told my former-girlfriend/fiancé-now-missus that its unfortunate that the lads will be playing on the same day of our wedding.

In her infinite wisdom (and boundless stress from arranging a DIY wedding reception) she didn’t check their concert date. Even Daniel Peters, editor of this site, got in on the joke, prompting her to go into the deep end. Deep enough for her to seriously concoct plans to ditch our reception at night AND send out a tweet to TTNG that hey, they should totally come by our wedding to play a song or two.

That was a signal that the joke went way too far, and she reacted in an appropriately displeased manner once I told her about that we were just pulling her leg. She broke off the wedding soon after, and I regret everything.

I kid; we had a nice enough ceremony by the sea with lots of our favourites from TTNG’s Animals. All was eventually forgiven (I think), but the whole prank got the attention of the Oxford lads, who then made a proper shout out to us during their show at Esplanade’s Annexe Studio.

Full article Here.
US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/47022932017-05-09T12:40:07-07:002021-06-22T23:11:38-07:00TTNG and Mylets Manila Show Review // Bandwagon

“I would like to dedicate this to a dog we met yesterday, who was very gracious about letting us bother him,” said Henry ‘Hank’ Tremain as he introduced their closing song for the night.

It wasn’t the first dedication the TTNG bassist/vocalist had made, as every song the band played was peppered with a shout-out to someone they’ve encountered since landing with Mylets in Manila two days before their show.

In many ways, TTNG + Mylets Live was like a typical gig in Manila. Produced by A Spur of the Moment Project (ASOTMP), the concert was held at 19 East in Sucat on a post-holiday Tuesday night, and also featured ASOTMP’s very own Tom’s Story and tide/edit, themselves fairly known names in the local indie scene. The crowd was made up of fans of all four bands, or at least folks who were predisposed to be, which meant barely anyone set foot outside the venue once the show began. Vocalist and bassist Henry Tremain and guitarist Tim Collis erupt in laughter, Tim adding further explanation.
“For the listener – Picture is dog with Birthday Cake, looking gleeful.”

Having had time to adjust (with Henry suggesting that TTNG would be the dog in the situation, the cake being the audience), Tim reflects further on their performance – commenting at one point that it was likely their best ArcTanGent set to date.
“No, it was great. Really great to play in the UK again, ‘cus I guess it’s been a while.” He says.
“Yesterday’s response was fucking incredible, like seriously.” Adds Henry. “One of the new songs we have this quiet build up and everyone was clapping along. It was pretty amazing.”

It’s fair to say that ArcTanGent is becoming a regular entry in the social calendars of those with a penchant for math/post/alt-rock and everything in-between. Growing in size year upon year, the organisers outdo themselves when curating incredible line-ups every time. TTNG have become a staple of the festival, having appeared at three of its four outings, matching the likes of And So I Watch You From Afar and Maybeshewill.
“We had a break, caught our breath and then we came back to eat some more audience members.” Laughs Henry.

Much like TTNG are becoming a regular fixture of ArcTanGent, so too is the inevitability that the weather will be foul. This year’s festival featured particularly outrageous weather. Almost at Monsoon levels, Fernhill Farm gave Manchester a run for its money with the amount of downpour. It almost made watching bands and drinking beer unbearable…
“It’s getting wetter and wetter each time.” Nods Tim.

The spirit of the attendees is always high, mind, and tents are always suitably rammed whatever the weather. Though the main stage has a slight ‘open-air’ issue, as many found out whilst watching Russian Circles a while back.
“The first one was awesome, then the second was crazy wet…” Adds Henry. “I remember seeing Russian Circles and getting totally drenched.”

Prior to their return to UK soil and triumphant showing at ArcTanGent, TTNG had been stateside on a run of North American dates throughout August and July with the likes of Lite, Mylets and GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! A mammoth journey through America, made even sweeter with a number of dates across the run selling out. The secret?
“Well we actually have a fan base over there…” Says Henry with a laugh. “It was a good tour, the sales were a lot better than we were expecting – the pre-sales beforehand had us kind of worried. We were feeling like that’s gonna be our last trip out to the states, but it actually went completely in the other direction.”

Sargent House mainstay and running mate of both And So I Watch You From Afar and TTNG (as discussed recently with the former in this interview), Henry Kohen a.k.a. Mylets was along for the ride during their stay in America. There’s an obvious bond between both bands and Henry, the younger Kohen popping up regularly on their various social media accounts whenever they’re in the US. It’s almost as if both bands have taken him under their collective wings, though TTNG jest that it’s likely the other way round.
“I think he’s pretty much an integral cog in our machine.” Say Tim of Henry. “He’s awesome to have on tour. He has a multi-functioning role on tour, so he TM’s and drives, plays and techs. It’d be really difficult to do it without him actually. He’s awesome and his music’s great so it’s always cool to play with him.”
“He writes these amazing compositions on the fly in the van…” Adds Henry with a laugh.

This is again another period of the interview which would benefit from video evidence or similar, with the trio sharing a laugh reminiscing about the songwriting talents of both Henry’s through the use of a music memo app on an iphone, allowing them to write such improvised van hits as ‘Mummy’ and its sequel ‘Daddy’. A suggested special improvised song for Birthday Cake For Breakfast using said app sadly never materialises.

Away from improvised van recordings, the North American Tour coincided with the release of the band’s third studio album, ‘Disappointment Island’. Recorded live to tape over a ten day period, the trio got together at the infamous Electrical Audio studios in Chicago with Greg Norman, before it was mastered by Bob Weston of Shellac. It was actually in America where TTNG got to shape the eventual album, during a tour with The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die and Foxing. Though the album itself had some uncertainty in the lead up to its completion, as Tim explains.
“I think it was good to get it done, for sure. I think there was a time before that we weren’t sure that it was gonna happen. It was kinda pressured to do it like that…” He says. “We kinda just went for it – it’s gotta be done by that time, so… It was helpful to have that.”

“We had kind of finished writing just before the tour and then we used the tour to rehearse the material, get it tour ready so that by the time we were in the studio, we’d kinda ironed out all the kinks and actually learned how to play the songs well enough, with enough energy.” Says Henry. “I think throwing them out in front of an audience is the exact environment where the pressure’s on where you have to get better and play them… I’m sure it led to some right stinkers during some of those shows, but it helped the album.” He laughs.
“Possibly another reason why we didn’t think anyone would show up for this tour – hey, here’s the new stuff and it’s all terrible.” Adds Chris with a smirk. “But no, it was a good method. Psychologically I personally felt actually ready to be in the studio, wherein other times it’s just chaos and being really anxious. Sort of knowing that – ok, in theory this is ready, I can play this – was a huge benefit going into the studio.”

Cramming everything into these ten day sessions clearly proved fruitful, though potentially took years off lifetimes, as the mention of their experience in the studio is greeted by a slight sense of dread between the three-piece. Flashbacks of the whip being cracked visible in their eyes.
“Stressful.” Confirms Chris when approached on the subject. “I found it stressful.”
“I found it incredibly stressful throughout, because the last thing to happen is the vocals.” Adds Henry. “That, for me, is a massive stress. The bit that I really enjoy, which is playing the music bit, was really enjoyable, but there was still this high pitched violin string running in the back of my mind. I was still tense throughout. But, having said that, Electrical Audio where we recorded it is the best place. I absolutely love that place, it just feels like home. Greg, who’s our engineer, is one of the best humans ever. Made us feel totally at home and he’s just funny as fuck. I was having a really bad time doing the vocals, but he’d always manage to say something down the headphones that would put shit in perspective and make me feel good again.”

“Get your head together!” Says Tim with a laugh, before summing up his own experience. “It’s kinda nice as well, because it was a fairly long tour before that, so it wasn’t a very sterile studio at all. It would’ve been weird going to that sort of place after quite a stressful tour. It was really homely, so it was kind of a really cool place to chill out – for the most part. I know I had an easy job, I only had to do one thing, so I had a pretty good time.”
“I felt kind of bad at the end of the session, I felt like I was moving out of home.” Adds Henry with a laugh.
“It’s got a really nice, homely vibe to it so it’s very relaxing.” Agrees Chris. “Which is good obviously, when you’re in a somewhat pressured environment or situation, I should say.”

Disappointment Island marks the first TTNG album recorded as a three-piece. Following the departure of lead singer and guitar player Stuart Smith and bass player Jamie Cooper over the years, the band transformed and Henry, Tim and Chris carried on as a trio.
“It’ll be the last” Comments Chris with a laugh when we discuss the album being put together as a trio. “No, it was great. We’ve been a three-piece for a long time, but obviously trying to play that first album that had four people on it was difficult. So this was great.”

With more room to breath, this allowed for more experimentation, including a new instrument busted out by Henry (though sadly not a ‘Daxaphone’, much to the chagrin of everyone in the band).
“Yeah dude, check out the Daxophone. It’s a real instrument.” Laughs Henry. “But yeah, I built this six-string bass baritone guitar that I play, and it was nice to actually – instead of using it to play the space between guitar parts and bass parts – to actually write for that instrument. It was super fun.”

Teasers for Disappointment Island began showing up online in early May in the form of picturesque little vignettes, accompanied by the outline of an island and coordinates. Brilliantly, Fecking Bahamas not only kept track of each individual video but looked up the coordinates online and pipped TTNG to the post regarding the album name (as did a fair few other not-so-lazy fans). The title itself goes back a number of years, with Google acting as inspiration. Much like the artwork that adorns its cover, Disappointment Island was something the trio were unable to forget.
“I’ve always wanted to visit.” Confesses Tim with a laugh.
“As soon as you find a place like that, there’s so much mystery behind that name.” Adds Henry. “I found it on google earth probably about six/seven years ago, by chance ‘cus I was working as a graphic designer in a print company. We had a slow period, so I would just fly around the planet, checking out Tokyo’s rail networks and then just checking out how big the Pacific Ocean is…”
“Turns out it’s pretty big.” Smirks Tim.

As anyone with access to YouTube, Google Earth or countless time-wasting platforms will attest, it’s relatively simple to become obsessed in pointless searches and get lost down a rabbit hole. This became Henry and his virtual flights across the globe, becoming obsessed with minuscule landmasses in the middle of the abyss. It was one such search that resulted in the discovery of ‘Disappointment Island’.
“We’ve kind of been joking about it for a while. After the session we recorded with Greg, we went out for some drinks. Tim suggested it jokingly as a title and then it’s like – that’s hilarious, no wait it’s actually kind of perfect. The more we thought about it, the more it made sense.”
“It all ties in with quite a few things.” Adds Tim. “I guess Henry can back this up, but perhaps lyrically on some of the topics and subjects he’s writing about. It’s pretty neat really, which is the total opposite of the previous album, which was just random chaos but seemed to also work out.” He laughs.

Similarly, the aforementioned striking artwork for Disappointment Island was practically found out of various fruitless google image searches, trawling through the internet in search of inspiration. The intricate, slightly oddball work of Ukrainian artist and illustrator Irena Zablotska came as love at first sight for the trio, with Henry commenting that the decision was made as soon as they’d caught sight of her work.
“She’s incredibly talented.” He says. “There’s some amazing character to the work that she does. We went through and we found that illustration and thought it was perfect for what we wanted.“

At the time of writing, TTNG have finished off their year with a trip to Japan to play with Lite – the cherry on top of a monumental 2016. Their current line-up is stronger than ever, with the trio highlighting this through Disappointment Island. Throughout the interview, the Collis siblings and Henry are joyful, taking the piss and are clearly a tight-knit group. All is going swimmingly then?
“We all put on brave faces for these kind of interviews…” Jokes Chris as the others laugh. “Things are going really well. We wanna write some new music I think.”
“I’m saving up for a Daxophone.” Grins Henry.

(via Birthday Cake For Breakfast)
US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/45145952016-12-16T14:00:01-08:002016-12-16T15:05:09-08:00TTNG On The Alternative’s Top 30 Of 2016

15. TTNG - Disappointment Island
This album has proven to be one of my favorites to just lay back and enjoy the music. Oxford. Math rock. Time signatures. Cats – you get the picture… They’re an undisputed institution. And rightly fucking so, because they’re incredible.

But, before you start chatting soppy shit about Stu and Animals, and how ‘Aardvark’ is the best thing they’ve ever done, let’s get one thing straight. Disappointment Island is some of the band’s best work. Period. So post that on your Facebook group.

Part of what makes Disappointment Island so good is it’s overwhelming authenticity. Recorded live, straight to tape, TTNG’s new album isn’t just a great record because of its songs, it’s also a great album because of how close it brings TTNG’s live and recorded sound. See perfect example below:

Taken from their session with Brighton boys Small Pond, ‘Sponkulus Nodge’ showcases just how far the Oxford 3-piece in the past few years and how relatable their most recent record is. Rather than switching gears entirely, the band’s well-known abbreviation became their official moniker.

“There are some legit rivals for the name on social media, like The Three Nice Girls and The Travel Network Group,” guitarist Tim Collis says with a smirk. “We get tagged in all sorts of stuff on social media. That’s the real reason we changed it: to do better on social media and to confuse our fans. Beside that, there’s a big chat and spiel we can go on, but it’s not a big deal.”

But that was almost four years and a pair of releases ago. These days, TTNG’s touring the world in support of July’s Disappointment Island and has built a fanbase spanning continents. But today, they’re still shaking off the jet lag and tracking down their instruments as they stroll into L.A.’s Mohawk Bend for a bit of lunch before their U.S. tour kicks off in two days. Of course, it’s a lot cheaper for TTNG to go out to eat on tour these days than it was for the first couple of tours.

“When we first started, there were five people,” Tim says as he bites into one of the four seared ahi tuna sandwiches at the table. “Then there were four, and then when we did 13.0.0.0.0 it was a transitional period. This is the first time we’ve been comfortable and written as three for the whole record.”

“I’m just looking forward to the next record as a two-piece,” jokes vocalist and bassist Henry Tremain. “We’re going to have to draw straws to see who gets cut.”

While some bands may struggle losing two members over two records, the guys in TTNG believe the downsizing has actually improved their sound. Tremain plays a modified bass to bridge the melodic gap of not having a second guitar, and each of the members believe that they have more space to shine individually as a trio. In a genre crowded with the most complex multi-guitar riffs and layered sounds, it gives TTNG a unique sound both on record and during live shows.

“It’s nice to have that variety rather than a tonal range for the entire album,” Tremain says as he crunches down on a fresh-made potato chip. “There are sections when the bass is missing, and then when the bass comes back in and you have some low frequencies it changes the feeling of the album. It gives variety and contrast, and I think contrast is super important for keeping music interesting.”

Over the course of the next few months, TTNG will find out just how an American audience feels about Disappointment Island during their live shows across the country. By the end of the year, they’ll have spanned most of the world with their new material in venues big and small. But while many bands dream of being able to tour internationally and have fans fill their concerts, the guys in TTNG are at the point where they appreciate the little things after over a decade of existence.

“It’s always fun to come [to the U.S.] and see everyone,” says drummer Chris Collis between fries. “It’s also nice to be out here in sunny California where the weather is beautiful. We haven’t had much of a summer back home in England, so the weather is a factor.”

“I’m just looking forward to avocado,” Tremain adds as he stares at his sandwich.

Although the sunshine and guacamole may not follow the band everywhere they go, there’s little doubt that TTNG will continue to be one of the biggest names in math rock for years to come. From Albuquerque to Ireland, Philadelphia to Japan, they’ll be continuing to dine on patios anytime the sun’s out and crack jokes on each other regardless of temperature.

And for those still wondering what TTNG could possibly stand for these days, Teenage Tutant Ninja Gurtles and Tar Trek the Next Generation are two of the band’s other favorites. It’s pretty tough to beat Tina Turner’s Nipple Gravy though.

(via Myspace)
US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/43842302016-09-21T14:50:36-07:002016-09-21T19:17:23-07:00Little Elephant Live Session // “+3 Awesomeness Repels Water”

TTNG recorded a live session with Little Elephant in August. Having just released their third record, Disappointment Island, the band feels more comfortable than ever, and feels that not much has changed when the traditional narrative of a new album assumes otherwise.

“We don’t feel as though much has changed, we’re still the same people doing what we love and if we have we haven’t noticed” said guitarist Tim Collis.

Nonetheless, the growth has been inevitable. Things get nerdier on “Bliss Quest” and “Destroy the Tabernacle!” with their focus on marking time and instrumental breaks. In contrast, on tracks like “Consoling Ghosts” and “Whatever, Whenever,” hectic rhythms take a back seat to the singer’s falsetto and the songs’ overall melancholic tone.” - AllMusic

“The longest track, “Whatever, Whenever,” showcases the best of TTNG: dextrous and experimental strings, sparing reverb and Henry Tremain’s falsetto, matched to complex guitar picking that’s at once impenetrable and calming. His guitarist brother Tim is as much of a presence on Disappointment Island as Tremain’s voice. Although the lyrics are often sad, the theme is still sardonic. “Bliss Quest,” for instance, ends with what sounds like a busy signal, and most songs feel playful despite sorrowful lyrics.” - Exclaim.ca, 8/10

“They are subtle masters of their craft, piecing together intricate bars of odd meter with such flow that it’s impossible to get lost. Disappointment Island is the first album to feature the band as a trio after former bassist Jamie Cooper left in 2011 and was written in two sessions two years apart. One session took place at the beginning of 2013 and the other in 2015, with the band entering the studio to record later that year. Disappointment Island was recorded live to tape over 10 days at Chicago’s pre-eminent Electrical Audio studios by Greg Norman (Mclusky, Russian Circles, Pelican) and mastered by Shellac’s Bob Weston and, unbelievably, is named after a real uninhabited island off the south coast of New Zealand. Employing barely any distortion or guitar effects, the supremely intricate technical playing of guitarist Tim Collis makes for a beautifully wistful yet mathematically elaborate bedrock for bassist / vocalist Henry Tremain’s mellifluous tones and drummer Chris Collis’s atypical drumming patterns.

The artwork was created by Ukrainian artist and illustrator Irena Zablotska. ‘She’s a great artist’ says Chris. ‘We came across her artwork quite randomly one day. We always wanted to use it as the album cover, even before we had the title for the album. In fact, we had joked about Disappointment Island for quite a long time after we saw it on a map. When we were discussing possible titles, Tim remembered Disappointment Island, and at first we said ‘there’s no way we could call it that!’ But the more we let the idea sit, the more we liked it. It seemed to bring everything together really well - encapsulating the artwork, the lyrical content, and our struggles and stresses getting the album written and recorded. Recording live to tape was very pressured - trying to get all three of us playing perfectly all the way through was quite a challenge! In the end I am very proud of what we achieved and this album would not have happened without the great encouragement and support of our loved ones.’

Click HERE to stream the new album and read a track-by-track analysis of the album by drummer Chris Collis.

(via The Independent)
US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/42434622016-06-22T11:17:33-07:002021-04-21T23:01:12-07:00Consequence Of Sound premieres new TTNG track “Sponkulus Nodge”

TTNG (fka This Town Needs Guns) know a thing or two about navigating complicated pathways. Their music has always been a labyrinth of math rock, filled with knotty rhythms that would seem to defy the melodies of the vocals. But the complexity extends beyond the recorded music right to the processes of actually getting it onto tape. They’ve been working on their follow-up to 2013’s 13.0.0.0.0, this July’s Disappointment Island, since before that last album was even released, and finding time to work out their intricate compositions wasn’t easy.

“With various touring commitments interspersed between the writing of [Disappointment Island], it was a difficult process to work through,” guitarist Tim Collis tells Consequence of Sound. “Snatching weekends here and there to try to rehash and complete draft versions of songs finally allowed a few more structured ideas to be completed for Hank [Tremain] to work on vocals. Partway through 2014, [drummer] Chris [Collis] and [I] managed to take a little time to try out some new riffs, working some of them into what would become this track, ‘Sponkulus Nodge’.”

All that patient perseverance paid off, though, as the song Collis discusses above proves. “Sponkulus Nodge” is a heady twister of a track, bass lines dropping down like water from stalactites into a pond rippling with Collis’ impossible guitar licks. Yet despite this cavernous vibe, there’s an open air quality that lifts it up on the assurance of Tremain’s vocals and the other Collis’ tripping drums.

Listen to “Sponkulus Nodge” HERE.

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/42195072016-06-08T10:29:39-07:002017-01-12T06:15:50-08:00AV Club premieres new TTNG track “Coconut Crab”

photo: Nick Sayers

Oxford’s TTNG (a.k.a. This Town Needs Guns) has been working up dashing math-rock compositions for over a decade, but it’s always avoided being pigeonholed. And on Disappointment Island—coming July 8 on Sargent House—the trio’s offered up its most accessible, pop-minded batch of songs yet. The A.V. Club is premiering the album’s opening track, “Coconut Crab,” below, and it shows TTNG at its most streamlined. Guitarist Tim Collis still concocts inhuman riffs, the likes of which make it hard to believe he’s the band’s lone guitarist. It makes bassist-vocalist Henry Tremain’s ability to find space for sing-along melodies all the more notable, as he flutters atop the ornate composition and never lets the song’s knotty rhythms get the best of him. Tremain also wrote a lengthy explanation of the song’s genesis, along with demos of the track, all of which can be found here.

Pre-orders for Disappointment Island are available now.

Visit AV Club to read about the origins of the song and hear early demos
US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/42174282016-06-07T08:02:51-07:002016-06-07T08:46:35-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/42113102016-06-03T08:00:10-07:002016-06-03T12:16:35-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41983072016-05-26T11:43:00-07:002017-01-12T06:15:50-08:00TTNG announces US tour

TTNG have just announced a full US tour in support of their upcoming album, Disappointment Island. LITE will be playing direct support on select dates. Back then, the Oxford-formed “math-rockers” were known as This Town Needs Guns and Henry wasn’t in the band—he was simply answering an ad for a spare room in the house I lived in in Norwich. He was wearing a Braid pin, so I figured he was alright and let him move in. We lived together that year, and he started playing in a local band called Saleontomorrow. I was running a local zine called Backlashat the time, and released the band’s first EP as a cover mount. After a year, I moved to London, and some 12 months later he moved into a spare room that opened up. We spent about five years there, in which time he started playing in a band called Pennines before joining This Town Needs Guns as vocalist, replacing original singer Stuart Smith. Soon after, he moved back to Norwich in order to be able to afford to be the band, and I moved to New York. Since then, the trio—completed by brothers Tim and Chris Collis (guitars and drums, respectively)—have been over to the US a number of times and it’s a sheer joy to see them play to an increasingly devoted fan base. The release of the band’s third full-length, Disappointment Island, seemed like a good excuse to catch up with my old friend and see what’s up and what’s changed for him since he joined the band—besides the band name and the lineup, obviously.

Listen to a song from the album, “A Chase of Sorts”, and read an interview with Henry Tremain HERE.

Noisey: First things first. Why did you call this record Disappointment Album? Er, I meanIsland! Are you setting yourselves up for a fall?
Henry Tremain: Disappointment Album—that’s about right! But exactly. I don’t know. You can look at it in many ways, but it’s pretty funny making an album called Disappointment Island.

Is the band still fun, even though it’s become a more professional pursuit for you? I mean, you get to tour the States and Japan and other far-flung places, so that must be great.
Well, I still think my favorite part of music is the writing and the creative process. The touring thing is something I’ve come to learn to enjoy—or at least learn to not hate so much. But yeah, it’s still enjoyable, but I guess it’s very different to bands in the past where it was just jamming really. And it’s difficult, because we can’t be freely creative because we all live in different places in the country and can only get together when there’s an agenda, I guess. We actually have to schedule time to write or schedule time to rehearse or record.

But I imagine, with the style of music you play, that could almost be more liberating—you can do your own thing by yourselves and then send it to each other.
That’s a really good point. The first thing we did for this record was book a rehearsal space in Brighton, and there was a load of pressure for us to write. We moved into a tiny little room—like a bedsit—on the coast and every morning at ten we’d go to the rehearsal space and we’d be there all day and have a full working day until the evening. And I think because there wasn’t enough space, because we didn’t get our own time to work on things, it got stagnant very quickly and it felt like we were going nowhere. It was a pretty depressing time! But we ended up writing a lot of material that at the time we thought was absolute crap but then, having had months away from it and reviewing it, quite a lot of it was quite interesting—and we’ve used most of that on the record!

So actually it wasn’t time wasted after all!
No. But I think it was only allowed to be finished off by the fact that we had that space away from it.

So how much did that stuff change between when you were writing it down in Brighton and when you were recording the album in Chicago?
Lots of the stuff we wrote in Brighton got thrown away and at least half, if not more, of the record was written after. But there were probably two tracks which hardly changed since we jammed them in Brighton. And the rest of it was taking a riff, restructuring it and writing different parts for and around it.

Which songs were those?
“Bliss Quest” is pretty much unchanged from the jam version that we recorded, and “Empty Palms”.

I was hoping you were going to say “Sponkulus Nodge,” because I wanted to ask what the fuck that means!
It’s unchanged from a working title. Tim is an absolute riff machine—he just writes and writes and records them so he can tab them out so he can remember how to play them. So his computer hard drive is just full of all these riffs, and each time he creates a riff, he gives it a silly name. “Sponkulus Nodge” was a name we just enjoyed too much to use another one!

What about “In Praise Of Idleness”? It sounds like a hark back to the times we lived together in Norwich and London… let’s be honest, you spent a lot of time being idle. How’s your work ethic now? Is it better? Does it have to be?
I’ve got lots on, so I’ve been working constantly, but I wish I was working towards something that would give me some sort of financial stability.

Do you think that’s ever going to happen with this band?
Oh no! [Laughs]

Have you guys all resigned yourselves to the fact that this is just a passion project? Because a lot of people love you, and you do so well in so many parts of the world. I don’t understand how it’s not even a little bit sustainable.
Well, it isn’t! I always think there’s slight gap between the perception of the band and how well the band actually does. We played a show in Brighton recently with some friends of ours recently—Delta Sleep and Tangled Hair—and both bands made jokes about how the crowd should stick around to see us play because we really need the help, making the joke that we are an established, successful band. In the crowd’s eyes we are, but actually, last time we played in Brighton we played this tiny little bar and it was half-empty. So in the UK we just don’t have any following.

But then you come over here and it’s full of really devoted fans. I remember the first time I saw you at Mercury Lounge and the crowd was insane.
Yeah. We have really passionate fans and in a major city there’s enough people to fill a venue, but outside of New York or Philadelphia or Los Angeles or Chicago, we’re playing smaller venues to no people!

Well, it’s all about the art, not the money.
Exactly!

Given what you said about not making any money from this band, what are your hopes for this record? You’ve named it Disappointment Island, but you must have some hopes for it.
I don’t think so! I haven’t really thought about it. I don’t think it’s an ambition for the record to do well. I don’t know. Why do bands record music? What’s that all about?

Let’s ask that question. Before you joined this band you’d sit at home and you’d play these riffs and you had fun doing that. So there’s something in the art of creation that obviously stimulates you somewhere…
But why do we feel the need to record them and put them out there?

So you’d rather they’d just exist on a computer at home or something?
I don’t know. I’m obviously doing it, maybe for an ego thing or for attention. Who knows?

But it’s nice to have a record of the things you create so you can look back in 20 years and say “Hey! I made this! It’s part of my life.” It captured a moment or a series of moments.
Like a photograph. You get to record it and look back on it. But in that case you’d record it keep it on your computer. You wouldn’t publish it or get a record label. So I have no idea. But I certainly don’t have hopes that the record’s going to do well, if you know what I mean.

Let’s talk about your name change. In 2013, you switched to the abbreviation TTNG instead of using This Town Needs Guns. What effect did that have on the band? Was it hard to do?
In terms of success, like we were talking about, it was a dumb thing to do. I don’t think it was a commercially sensible thing to do because there are quite a lot of people who don’t realize we’re the same band.

And you did it just before 13.0.0.0.0. came out, which was released as This Town Needs Guns, but then you were touring it as TTNG. Which could be a little bit confusing if you’re dumb.
Well, I mean, who knows what TTNG stands for! I think it’s a dumb name. And I don’t think TTNG is an ideal name, but it’s a way of us not having that original name that I think is really not very nice and keeping a link to the older material. But it’s not ideal. I think abbreviation names are pretty dumb, generally. It’s weird how some bands like AFI and some acronym bands manage to do okay without needing to explain what it stands for. I imagine a whole lot of AFI fans don’t know what that stands for.

Did you find people were generally okay with you changing it? Or were there some purists who took offence?
Absolutely. I think there was an assumption that we were doing it for ulterior motives. I think there’s a lot of cynicism generally about bands and I think people assume that if a band is doing something it’s to make themselves more successful or commercially viable. I think there was an assumption we were under pressure from the label or something to be more PC and people would make these assumptions and write about them and not take the time to read what we’d said about them.

The funny thing, like we’ve said, is that this is the first record you’ve recorded all together from start to finish and it is the first record you’ve made as TTNG, so it is a fresh start in a way. But I love how the time periods of all those things totally overlap. It’s kind of making a mockery of that idea of changing things with a specific purpose in mind.
Right. And I think the band’s had a nice progression, and if you listen through the years to all of the band’s output, there’s a similarity that follows through it, but it’s clearly changed quite a bit.

I was going to say, this definitely sounds… not more poppy, because it’s not, but it definitely sounds less “math-rocky” even though those math-rock tendencies are still very much there. They’re not as salient—they’re a part of it, rather than the focus of it.
Absolutely. Time signatures, like any compositional device, the more you use them the more comfortable they become. They become second nature and it’s not a conscious effort, it’s just another flavor to songwriting.

By the time you get to album number seven, you’ll be three-chord wonders!
I do think the term “math-rock” is really elitist. I mean, bands like Radiohead are always messing around with time signatures, but they’re not considered to be math-rock.

So are you trying to shed that title?
We never embraced that title! It was thrust upon us. I don’t think it was appropriate, but I guess the meaning of math-rock has changed, so maybe it is appropriate!

I mean, everyone always calls the Kinsellas math-rock, and everyone always mentions the Kinsellas when they describe TTNG’s music, so you know! But that must get a bit wearing after a while, as great as they are.
I think a lot of those bands have been huge influences on us, but I do find the whole Kinsella band thing a little frustrating, because although there are a couple of dudes who have the surname Kinsella, there are other people and other bands who don’t have the surname Kinsella who are probably more influential.

You never know—they might start calling it Tremain-core soon. I quite like that.
[Laughs] I don’t!

(via Noisey)
US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41928072016-05-23T08:00:16-07:002016-05-23T08:46:48-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41898052016-05-20T08:00:38-07:002016-05-20T10:32:27-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41866262016-05-18T08:56:46-07:002016-05-18T13:03:06-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41828062016-05-16T08:08:26-07:002016-05-16T10:03:08-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41777592016-05-12T08:01:43-07:002016-05-12T09:16:40-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41770922016-05-11T13:35:05-07:002022-02-07T09:04:48-08:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41739502016-05-10T09:03:04-07:002016-05-10T11:46:33-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/41727152016-05-09T10:35:23-07:002016-05-09T15:32:30-07:00Video

US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/40062562016-01-25T10:49:13-08:002017-01-12T06:15:45-08:00TTNG announces co-headlining Europe tour with Foxing

TTNG will be joining Foxing for a co-headlining tour in Europe starting this April.
On the night of TTNG‘s last show of their 2014 US Tour, I was able to spend time with their lead guitarist and founding member Tim Collis. For those of you who don’t know TTNG (formerly This Town Needs Guns), they are a 3-piece rock band hailing from Oxford UK and are currently signed to the superb indie label, Sargent House.

The band has been around since 2004, influencing fans and inspiring musicians around the world with their unique and emotional sound. Beyond their recent name change, they also experienced a line up change as well, with the departure of rhythm guitarist and vocalist Stuart Smith (replaced by Henry Tremain of Pennines), the addition of Tim’s brother Chris on drums (replacing Matt Bennington), and the departure of bassist Jamie Cooper. You would think with so many changes that the band’s sound would suffer or that their fan base might dwindle, but the change has only seemed to make their sound tighter and they are more popular than ever. TTNG is only just scratching the surface of their sound, with a new release in the works and their sights set on global domination.

TONY: First, I’d like to say that you guys are honestly one of my favorite bands so this is a great honor to be able to sit with you to ask some questions.

TIM: Awesome, thank you man!

TONY: Your album 13.0.0.0 was your first album with the current TTNG lineup. Now that you’ve had a little over 2 years in the formation, what has the experience been like?

TIM: Yeah, it’s been great actually. I think when you have a major lineup change you are kind of apprehensive about it, I guess with anything where there is a big change it’s kind of about being apprehensive. Yeah, Henry has been playing with us for like 3 years now at least, and it’s been going really well. He’s totally taken it in his stride, he’s such a great musician he doesn’t make it look difficult in terms of transition.

TONY: Any talk of expanding again to a 4 piece to include a bassist, or are you is remaining a 3-piece your preference?

TIM: We’re pretty happy as a 3-piece, the dynamic seems to work really really well. I don’t know what it is, but 3 seems to be a really good number to work with, not just in terms of personal lives and less people to have to organize and so on, but musically we seem to be able to bounce ideas around a lot quicker. And that is no sort of disrespect or negativity towards having more members, but it just seems to be have been a very a really smooth process and it’s been very natural.

TONY: Are you working on/planning to release a new album soon, and if so, what can we expect from this upcoming release?

TIM: Actually yeah, at the end of this tour, so like tomorrow, we are going to the Farm that the label Sargent House owns, a couple hours outside of the Los Angeles. We’re probably going to be doing some demos for some new stuff and we’ll hopefully get an EP together for next year. Well, we’re thinking an EP, but it could be more.

TONY: Any specific thoughts or ideas for this new EP in terms of your overall sound?

TIM: I mean, it’s nothing sort of drastically different. I mean it’s early days, so I guess these demos will sit in a very similar kind of ilk to the old stuff and then we’ll see when we get to studio stage what we decide to do when we’ve got the time to really listen to them as well.

TONY: You have a lot of material, new and old. What’s your favorite song to perform live and why?

TIM: I don’t know if I have a favorite really. I guess it’s a hard question, because we’re kind of at the stage where are playing what we consider all old stuff, I guess. I mean, some of it is obviously a lot older than other songs. I don’t know, it would be an easier question to answer when we start playing new tracks because they’d probably stick out. In saying that, we are playing one new song, so I’ll go with this untitled new song that we are playing tonight just because it’s a bit fresher. I’ll tell you that it’s fun as well because Henry from Mylets joins us to play bass on that. I think it’s called Snoopy at the moment, I don’t know why.

TONY: Speaking of Snoopy, I know you guys do a lot of stuff on your Facebook page with Animals and stuff. What’s the reasoning behind that?

TIM: I think animals seem to amuse us. You know, if they’ve put clothing on or someone has got them in a particular sort of situation and it’s amusing, we get a hold of it pretty quick. We’re just morons and it amuses us.

TONY: I know last year you made the choice to change the name to TTNG due to all the gun controversy. Your fans have embraced it, but do you ever miss referring to yourself by the original full name, This Town Needs Guns?

TIM: It’s all kind of fairly trivial, in terms of the music is the focus and so on. No, I mean, I don’t miss the name. It kind of was a logical thing in a way which probably doesn’t seem that way to most people, but as Henry joined it was new time for us and you know, none of us ever particularly ever liked that band name, and it seemed like at this point it was a good time to change and we kind of did it as soon as we could. Basically, the problem we found was that it was a statement that for us never had any political association to it, but people over here thought it meant quite a bit more. People in support of guns were often like “yeah, you guys are great!” and love the band name for that reason, and we sort of felt a bit like well yeah it really doesn’t come from that place. It comes from the UK were it’s really an ironic, sort of stupid band name.

TONY: So if it wasn’t Guns, what would the town need?

TIM: Um, probably…let me think…Clowns. You can never have too many clowns…I think.

TONY: You guys have toured quite a bit this past year. With this being your last show of the tour, where have you found the fans to be the most receptive?

TIM: We always have a great show in Chicago. The fans there are kind of our perfect set of fans. It’s weird, we’ve had some shows this tour where let’s say that alcohol has gotten the better of people, I wouldn’t say like ruining the show, not for us but for other people, but they’ve been kind of loud and obnoxious. You know, we are not like anti-drinking or anything, but some people have had no control and has kind of put a downer on some of the shows, which has been a shame. But yeah, Chicago has been a favorite for a while, and we have got kind of a bond to that city cause a lot of influences come from there, like BIlly Corgan. The fans are just so great there. They’re kind of the perfect balance of really respectful and you could have a good laugh with them. They’re really excited, and up for a good time. It doesn’t seem to matter what day of the week it is, there are dudes who roll in from work and are just really up for it, and that’s been cool. But yeah, we’ve had some great shows this tour so it’s kind of hard to say, but Chicago sticks in my mind.

TONY: Well, I’m from Chicago if that helps.

TIM: That was the right answer.

TONY: Is there a place in general overall that you’ve just thought is amazing overall, like Japan?

TIM: Yeah, actually Japan is probably a favorite for all us. It’s just an incredibly different place, culturally obviously. It’s kind of one of those places where it’s rare for us to go there so that’s always special. The people are the next level of respect, it’s crazy. We first played some shows there in 2010 and the crowds were just like silent, and we were just like this is super weird, I don’t think they like it, this odd. But, it’s just that they are so focused and so polite and it’s so wonderful. It’s a really different energy, because there is still an energy between you and the crowd but it’s so different than rowdy people in the UK, Europe, or the US. So, yeah Japan would probably be up there.

TONY: Any places you haven’t toured that you’d like to hit? I know I have a lot of friends in the Philippines who want you to play there.

TIM: Yeah, I’d love to hit some more places in Asia for sure, but I know we also want to go to South America. There seems to be pockets of fans in places like Chile and Argentina that hit us up quite a lot and say can you ever come out, but it’s such a costly thing to do that it’s kind of difficult. But yeah, I would say South America would be awesome to go to.

TONY: Math-rock as a whole, more so than other musical genres, really seems like a community where bands connect, collaborate, and inspire each other. Is this something you’ve noticed, and are there any bands that TTNG is close with?

TIM: I think like, to be honest, any band on the label, as soon as we meet them there is this bond and they are not necessarily math-rock. I mean, I don’t even know if we are necessarily math-rock, it’s kind of subjective really, but any band off the label we seem to kind of gel with. I think most of the bands we meet are good people, and we have a lot in common with, so it’s fairly easy to be in that situation, but I guess I’d have to say that the bands we’ve toured a lot with like Henry from Mylets it’s been great to kind of bond with him, and Emma this tour in particular. Yeah, I don’t know if there is any one band that we are super super close with. There are loads we would absolutely love to get see all over the world, and it’s kind of rare when you see obviously people further away.

TONY: Are there bands that you’ve been listening to right now that you’d like to recommend?

TIM: Mylets, his new album sounds awesome. We’ve also been listening to quite a bit of Swedish music this tour, cause everyone is into different Swedish bands so we’ve all been sharing them. We’ve been listening to a band called Mew quite a lot. Yeah, loads and loads of Swedish bands actually.

TONY: Finally, what is your mantra, either collectively as TTNG or individually?

TIM: I guess, just being ourselves. I think we’ve said before at some point that people can get a bit caught up of the persona of what’s expected from being in a band, and it’s just kind of being honest really and having respect for other people and hopefully having them respect you at the same time. Just generally spreading a positive vibe if possible, which is tough some times especially with a long tour. Like if you get sick, like Henry from Mylets has been pretty sick, or you know if you get tired and tough and stuff it can really get really affect trying to get that across and have that positive energy. Yeah, when we’re all good and we’re all happy, it’s cool and you can really feel it with the crowd which is nice.
US / THEM Grouptag:usthemgroup.com,2005:Post/37405062014-12-10T17:19:43-08:002017-01-12T06:15:37-08:00Local record label Sargent House is home to many amazing artists...

Local record label Sargent House is home to many amazing artists and Saturday night at The Echo was a good primer of sorts for the uninitiated.
Fellow earth-dwellers, behold wonderful new sounds from the band-name-acronymizing supertrio that is TTNG.

For those of you unfamiliar with TTNG (all eleven of you), these UK-inhabiting lads seamlessly weave together a combination of complex guitar phrases, poignant melodies and charming British affability. Lend me a moment to properly express the latter of these traits, for we at Fecking Bahamas collectively doubt that we’ve met anyone as patient, courteous and polite as TTNG. They are the sort of guys that would help your grandma cross the street in peak hour. They are the Samaritans that would deescalate a convenience store robbery by hastily purchasing and brewing some organic rooibos tea, and subsequently sitting down with the perpetrators and politely leading them towards a more peaceful solution that benefits both themselves and the convenience store franchise. I have heard that there is a secret subdivision of Buddhism called TTNG, practiced by monks deep in the valleys of the Himalayas (where, for egalitarian reasons, the mountains are known as the ‘Him/Her-alayas’ so as not to offend anyone). I’m serious.

Okay, let’s cut to the chase. We here at Fecking Bahamas are proud to be working with Small Pond Recordings to bring you this live performance from TTNG. This live video, captured by the Small Pond team during this year’s ArcTanGent festival, features a previously unreleased song that’ll surely get your plasma tingling.

TTNG will join Sargent House label-mates Mylets and Emma Ruth Rundle in a month long N. Their latest offering is this year’s 13.0.0.0.0. When they stopped by our offices, they performed two songs from the album. We already posted “Cat Fantastic”; today, we’re sharing “Left Aligned,” which features similarly complex rhythms and a great deal of restraint from lead singer Henry Tremain.

Check out the performance above, and catch them in Canada this month as they play a string of dates North of the border on the Sargent House tour with And So I Watch Your From Afar and Mylets.
